Kalim (Utensil) Mikveh

In the courtyard of Chofetz Chayim we have built a beautiful Kailim (Utensil) Mikveh which is easily accessible and open to the Jewish public. This mitzvah has been performed by our ancestors for the past 3,325 years. We are proud to be able to present to the Tucson Jewish community the opportunity to continue this tradition in a beautiful setting. Numerous Tucson families have made the immersion of their utensils a meaningful family project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Do We Immerse Our Utensils ?

The Biblical source for the immersion of utensils is Bamidbar (Numbers) 31:23. The Torah has spiritually elevated the mundane activity of eating and has endowed it with special sanctity. The food we eat is kosher and the table upon which we eat our meals represents the altar of the Holy Temple. Similarly, the kailim (utensils) used for preparing food and for dining are given special holiness.

Which Utensils Do Require Immersion?

Metal and glass utensils that come in contact with food during preparation or serving and were produced by or acquired from a non Jew require immersion.

Which Utensils Do Not Require Immersion?

Wood, bone, earthenware, ceramics, plastic and rubber.

How Does One Prepare A Utensil For Immersion?

If a utensil has been used for non-kosher food, kosherizing must take place before immersion. The utensil should be completely clean. All labels should be removed.

How Does One Immerse A Utensil?

You must immerse the entire vessel at one time. Covers and handles need to be immersed. Say the blessing “Al Tevilas Kailim” found in the Artscroll Siddur on page 227-228.
