Esther Becker
Meet Esther Becker
Esther was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in an environment where synagogue life, community life, and the well-being of each and every Jew was always at the forefront. Their home was always the center of activity in their community. In the early years, Esther’s mother, Sarah Winter, would collect pennies from people so that a Jewish school could open and thrive within their area. Esther’s father, the late Sidney Winter, spearheaded the building of a new synagogue and was at the helm of many Jewish activities on a national scale. A trademark of their home was to always have the doors open for young people and members of the community to experience the flavor of Jewish life. While in Brooklyn College and working as a computer programmer, she was actively preparing to some day marry a rabbinical student in the hopes that she and her rabbi-to-be would create a life together dedicated to Jewish education and outreach while building a family.
After meeting Rabbi and supporting him through the next 6 years of study, both in Queens, New York and Israel, the Beckers came to Tucson in 1979 to found Congregation Chofetz Chayim. In addition to raising 9 children, Esther has touched the hearts of families in the Tucson area with her wisdom, insight and genuine compassion. She has created an atmosphere where the Becker home is always open, and she adds a special grace and warmth to all Chofetz Chaim events, and her classes at the Women’s Academy of Jewish Studies (WAJS), and throughout the community always leave participants wanting to come back for more as evidenced by the many students taking her clases since its inception.
